How to get rid of mucus in your chest and throat

or other environmental pollutants.

Several simple home remedies may help soothe an irritated throat and make mucus easier to clear. However, these remedies do not cure every respiratory illness, and persistent or severe symptoms may require medical attention.

  1. Ginger Tea

Ginger is traditionally used to soothe the throat and may help relieve some cold-related discomfort. Warm drinks can also soothe irritation and help keep you hydrated, although there is limited evidence that ginger directly clears mucus from the lungs.

Ingredients:

6–7 slices of fresh ginger

1 teaspoon of honey

few black peppercorns (optional)

2 cups of water

Preparation:

Bring the water to a boil.

Add the ginger and, if desired, the black peppercorns.

Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for about 5 minutes.

Remove from the heat and strain into a cup.

Allow the tea to cool slightly before adding the honey.

Sip the tea while it is comfortably warm. Honey should not be given to children under 12 months of age.

  1. Honey and Lemon

Honey may help soothe an irritated throat and relieve coughing, particularly at night. Lemon

there is insufficient evidence that gargling with turmeric treats respiratory infections or clears chest mucus.

Ingredients:

½ teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of turmeric powder (optional)

1 glass of warm water

Preparation:

Mix the salt and turmeric into the warm water.

Gargle for several seconds.

Spit out the mixture rather than swallowing it.

You may use a plain saltwater gargle for temporary throat relief. Avoid gargling if you cannot do so safely.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is sometimes promoted as a remedy for mucus and throat congestion. However,

there is no good evidence that it reduces mucus production, balances the body’s pH, or treats respiratory infections.

If you choose to use it, dilute it thoroughly in water. Do not drink it undiluted or use it as a substitute for proven treatment, as its acidity can irritate the throat and damage tooth enamel.

  1. Warm Moist Air and Humidification

Warm, moist air may help relieve nasal dryness and irritation, although evidence that steam inhalation clears chest mucus is limited.

A safer approach:

Take a comfortably warm shower.

Use a clean

humidifier if the air in your home is dry.

Drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration.

Avoid smoking and exposure to smoke or strong fumes.

Avoid leaning over a pot of boiling water or covering your head with a towel over hot water. This can cause serious burns. Essential oils and herbs such as thyme and rosemary are not proven to treat respiratory infections, and their vapors may irritate sensitive airways.
